The Living Desert & Sculptures

AN INTRODUCTON TO THE LIVING DESERT

The Living Desert Reserve is nestled amongst the Barrier Ranges and is located 9km from the City of Broken Hill. The Living Desert is a unique 2400ha reserve which commenced in 1992. The topography, scenery and views within the reserve are breathtaking and are captured throughout the numerous walking trails.
Located within the reserve, settled amongst the tranquility of the gullies and rocky outcrops is the 180ha Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary which is bordered by an electric predator proof fence. The Flora and Fauna Sanctuary will allow visitors to gain an educational and cultural experience to further enhance and understand Aboriginal Heritage and to instil the importance of preservation of the environment for the benefit of future generations.

Another major attraction within the Living Desert is the Sculpture Symposium, a nationally successful sculpture symposium situated on a majestic hilltop within the centre of the reserve. The Symposium was completed in 1993 by artists from around the world, under the direction of organiser and artist Lawrence Beck. 12 Sandstone Sculptures highlight the skyline, all with a story to tell. The Sculpture Symposium can be accessed via a 1.2km walking trail starting from the Flora and Fauna Sanctuary car park. There's also a vehicle access to the sculptures. For this a key needs to be obtained from the Visitor Information Centre (cnr Blende/Bromide St; open 7 days a week 8.30am - 5.00pm) prior to departure. $20 need to be deposited and a $10 entry fee applies per vehicle. Coach/Group bookings available for$4 per person and required to be booked in advance at the Visitor Information Centre (Ph 08 8080 3560). Wedding/Party bookings available.

In addition to the major attractions the Living Desert provides a recreational picnic area with free gas barbeques, shade shelters and toilets.
A 2 1/2 hour visit to the Living Desert from the City (return trip) will allow visitors to explore the Cultural Walk Trail within the Sanctuary and experience the Sculpture Symposium.
