National Parks

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, part of the Department of Environment and Conservation, manages five national parks in the region. These parks, and the experiences they offer, are as diverse as the outback itself.

Kinchega National Park is located 110km south-east of Broken Hill. The park is known for its pastoral heritage and the accommodation available within the park includes the shearer's quarters. For more information click here or contact Broken Hill Area Office on 08 8080 3200.

Mutawintji National Park is located 130km north-east of Broken Hill. It is rich in Aboriginal culture and heritage and special tours are run seasonally by traditional owners. For more information click here or contact the Broken Hill Area Office on 08 8080 3200.

Mungo National Park is located 110km north-east of Mildura. It lies mostly within the Willandra Lakes World Heritage area and covers much of an ancient dry lake bed. The park preserves one of the longest continual records of Aboriginal life in Australia, dating from around 50,000 years ago through to the present day. For more information click here or contact the Lower Darling Area Office on 03 5021 8900.

Paroo-Darling National Park is located 80km north of Wilcannia. The recently opened White Cliffs Visitor Centre is a great starting point for a visit to Peery Lake, part of the Paroo River and home to the mound springs. For more information click here or contact the Broken Hill Area Office on 08 8080 3200.

Sturt National Park is located 330km north of Broken Hill, in the north-west corner of NSW. Known by some as 'the kangaroo park', it is a great place to experience Australian native animals including kangaroos, emus and eagles. The park is also known for its stunning landscape and breathtaking vistas. For more information click here or contact the Tibooburra Area Office on 08 8091 3308.
