REGIONAL NSW FIRST BREAK PROGRAM

An outstanding opportunity for emerging filmmakers who live in Regional
NSW to learn, make and travel.

FIRST BREAK
First Break is an initiative of Metro Screen, the leading independent screen learning and
development hub in NSW for filmmakers. One of the ten projects selected in the First Break
program will be reserved for emerging filmmakers who live in regional NSW.
First Break is generously supported by Screen NSW and Screen Australia.
Applications close 02 Feb 2011.

ABOUT
First Break is for emerging filmmakers*. The First Break agreement will be exclusively
between the director and Metro Screen. The applicant may be either the writer/director or a
director and writer team where the director has been assigned all rights to the script to be
developed and produced through the First Break program.

Ten projects of up to 10 minutes duration will be selected with three places awarded to
applicants from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent, three places for applicants from
a multicultural background and one place awarded to an applicant from regional NSW**.
Drama, doco, animation, series pilot, experimental, cross-platform will be considered.
*Both the writer and director must not have a produced screen credit in their respective
roles, that has been released, broadcast or screened at a recognised film festival.
**Travel costs and accommodation for attending Sydney workshops will be provided.
The BREAKS opportunity spans the complete filmmaking process from initial concept
through script development, pre-production, production and postproduction. The BREAKS
programs incorporate mentoring and training by industry professionals with all final works
presented at a showcase screening. The tailored training component is only compulsory in
the FIRST BREAK program.

Successful regional applicants will receive:
1. Return transport and accommodation to the one-day script development workshop
Saturday 24th March at Metro Screen in Paddington.
2. Return transport and accommodation to the tailored Directors workshop held from
Friday 30 March through Mon- 2 April at Metro Screen in Paddington
3. Return transport and accommodation the First Break screening in Sydney (at a date
to be decided).
4. Freight costs of allocated Metro Screen production equipment to and from your
shooting location if it is outside the Sydney Region
5. An on-site visit from your Mentor

PLUS:
• A cash budget of $4,000 for production and crew fees.
• Production equipment and post production facilities to the value of $1,000
• An established screen industry Mentor
• A joint cast and crew screening with other similarly funded Metro Screen projects
within two months of the deliverables date.

Metro Screen is looking for filmmakers with drive, ambition and the commitment to
produce a short screen project. Drama, documentary, animation, experimental or cross
platform projects will be considered. Applicants are selected on the quality of their idea,
their relevant skills and their commitment to a screen career.
